Pork and turkey wurstels are a popular kind of sausage throughout the country, but their origin and tradition come from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Appreciated by everyone – especially children because of their taste – they can be stored for a long time in the refrigerator and don’t take much time to cook.
Pork and turkey wurstels are a very versatile product, perfect for making many tasty recipes such as main courses or salads.
Traditionally, wurstels are made with pure pork meat or a combination of pork and beef. Even though they are the most typical ones, recently, wurstels to which chicken or turkey meat is also added are becoming more popular as they are leaner meats.
Pork and turkey wurstels are gluten- and polyphosphate-free.
How to prepare them
Pork and turkey wurstels are perfect for all types of cooking, just choose according to the taste and texture you want to achieve: grilled, griddled, boiled, baked or microwaved, they will never disappoint! With wurstels you can indulge while cooking and prepare excellent dishes in no time. We recommend poking holes in the surface of the wurstels with the help of a fork or a toothpick before starting to prepare them so that they are cooked evenly and perfectly.
To make nice starters, you can wrap your pork and turkey wurstels in puff pastry, make different shapes and bake them in the oven, or you can prepare skewers to cook on the griddle with courgettes, onions, wurstels and sweet Provolone cheese. Otherwise, you can make the traditional American hot dog or the great German street food classic: the sausage and sauerkraut sandwich, to be served, as tradition dictates, with a glass of craft beer.
There are also many other dishes that can be prepared using wurstels such as Spelt or rice salad, topped with diced wurstels, courgettes, carrots and sweet Provolone cheese. Pork and turkey wurstels can also be used to make a tasty fondue bourguignonne. Or, if you want to create a quick and easy but very tasty dish, you can cut the frankfurters and bake them in the oven with potatoes, mushrooms and rosemary; a great rustic pancake ideal for winter menus!
Curiosities
The word ‘wurstel’ literally means ‘sausage’. This sausage has its origins in Germany as ‘würstchen’, Switzerland as ‘wienerli’ and Austria as ‘frankfurter-würstel’. In Italy, it is most widespread and regarded as a typical food of Trentino Alto Adige as ‘wiener’ or ‘wiener würstchen’. Nevertheless, it is also widely spread in America where it is used to make the famous corn dogs or hot dogs.
